Triterpenes: In folk medicine, the healing effects of substances from various parts of birch have been known since ancient times. Birch water, i.e. sap flowing from the injured bark of live birch, has very good regenerative and supportive effects for hair growth and quality. Extracts of young twigs, buds and young leaves of birch are used in various food supplements, juices and syrups in spring cleansing and healing peels. The use of birch beetle (grib chaga) for the supportive treatment of cancer is also described in folk medicine. The use of birch twigs in saunas is perhaps the most well-known use of birch in folk medicine.
However, even birch bark should not go unnoticed, because it contains a high percentage of substances of triterpene origin (betulin, lupeol), which have significant biological effects. As is well known, the bark of older birches has a white color, which is just caused by the main ingredient - betulin. Betulin is currently being intensively studied mainly for its positive effects - it has a protective function on the liver, antiphlogistic, antiviral effects and some of its derivatives are being tested in the fight against cancer, HIV and others.
Monoterpenes: The various essential oils and fragrances contained in plants or spices have been known for a very long time and are still widely used, whether in perfumery, in the kitchen or for their significant beneficial effects. Here are a few of the best-known examples - lemon and orange essential oils (mostly limonene), mint essential oils (the main ingredient in menthol), eucalyptus, camphor and many more. However, in addition to the notorious properties (eg eucalyptus, camphor and menthol on a stuffy nose in colds), they also have other beneficial effects - antiseptic, antimicrobial / disinfectant and antifungal. Some monoterpenes are being tested as anti-cancer drugs.
