The damask rose, or if you also want a damask rose, looks like our rosehip rose (if it blooms, it also has rosehips) and has the highest essential oil content, so it is grown for its production. The rose essence has been known since ancient times, when the Persians used it as a perfume and as an aphrodisiac (the rose was and will be dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite). However, the ancient Greeks and Romans did not know 100% rose oil, but used only rose water. The production of rose oil did not begin until Europe, when the first rose water from the Crusades' war campaigns was imported, and in the 13th century, the French knight Robert de Brie began to cultivate it in the gardens of his castle. The first attempt to distill rose water in order to obtain rose oil was not made until 1577 in Frankfurt am Main. Approximately 3-4 tons of damask rose petals are needed to produce one liter of 100% rose oil (for comparison, "only" 200 kg of lavender flowers is enough to produce one liter of lavender oil)! The world's largest producer is Bulgaria, which has a pink field with an area of 50x80 km in the Kazanlak valley with a special climate for this purpose!
